Kingdom of the Netherlands

The Kingdom of the Netherlands is a country united under the monarch of the Netherlands. Since its defeat in World War II, the Kingdom of the Netherlands has not controlled its homeland in Western Europe, which has been under occupation of the Greater Germanic Reich. The Free Dutch government now lives in Suriname in South America, which borders Guyana to the west, the Allied Administration of Guiana-Cayenne to the east, the United States of Brazil to the south and the Caribbean to the north. It also controls several smaller island territories located in the Caribbean.

History

Pre-war history

The Netherlands was a country that had a mostly trade based economy, and controlled all of Indonesia as part of the Dutch East Indies. The Netherlands, like many other now defunct nations, was neutral in WWI and attempted the same in 1940.

World War II

As part of Fall Gelb, the Netherlands was invaded by German forces. The Dutch military was easily swept aside and the country fell under Nazi rule. The Dutch colonies in Indonesia remained under Allied control until the Japanese invasion in early 1942, which set up the nominally independent Republic of Indonesia. The Dutch royal family and government initially fled to London, then to Suriname after the United Kingdom was defeated by the German Reich during Operation Sea Lion.

The 1947 Dutch Constitution Stability: +10.00% Daily Liberal Democrat Support: +0.01 Talk of constitutional reform was already commonplace during the government's exile in London; however, when the government was forced into further exile in the Caribbean, there was no choice; the constitution was reformed. The new Constitution of 1947 is not too different from the previous ones in its underpinnings; it espouses the fundamental values of freedom and democracy, under a constitutional monarchy. However, it is different in one major thing: it provides ample autonomy to the various remaining Caribbean colonies, which have become constituent democracies within the democracy that is the exiled Kingdom of the Netherlands.
