In-Game Biography
In Katanga, few names invoke wealth and prestige as that of Tshombe. The Tshombe lineage recalls merchants, princes, and many Lunda kings, a legacy to which Moïse Tshombe, President of the State of Katanga, sees himself heir apparent.
Moïse Tshombe, born November 10, 1919, was the eldest of his father's children and inherited many enterprises which Moïse mismanaged to bankruptcy. Abandoning business, Tshombe entered politics backed by familial ties and gained support from the Lunda people in Katanga on an anti-minority platform. Tshombe's movement, organized under CONAKAT, promotes tribalism against ethnic minorities while supporting white settler interests, notably mining giant Union Minière.
Katanga's millionaire president, to outsiders, is unique for his connections with Europe's elite and willingness to work with anybody. Those close to President Tshombe know his flippancy, impressionability, and general unreliability, which makes him agreeable to anybody and nearly anything. Such are the politics of Moïse Tshombe, whose absolute pragmatism may yet sell Katanga to its independence.
