Emil Maurice (born 19 January 1897) is a German SS officer who currently serves as Military Commissioner of Madagascar.

Biography

Early-life

Maurice was among the first members of the NSDAP, joining in 1919. Maurice lead the SA in many street fights during the party's early days. He was a close friend of Adolf Hitler and became his chauffeur. He acted as one of Hitler's personal bodyguards and participated in the Beer Hall Putsch, after which he was thrown in prison along with Hitler and Rudolf Hess. He later became one of the first members of the SS.

Fall from favor

Maurice was held in high regard as a loyal Nazi, until it was revealed in 1935 that he was of partly Jewish heritage. Heinrich Himmler wanted Maurice to be removed from the SS, but was refused by Hitler, who granted Maurice "honorary aryan" status. Maurice afterwards held several minor party positions.

Leader of Madagascar

Due to constant SS demands for his removal, Maurice was sent to French Madagascar. This is seen by many, including Maurice himself, as him being exiled as to not annoy Himmler any more. Maurice reportedly hates Madagascar and has fallen into a deep depression. It is said that he would do anything to return home to Germany.
