The Liberal Party of Canada (Parti libéral du Canada) is the oldest and current ruling party of Canada, founded prior to Confederation. It recently saw a massive success in the 1958 federal election, replacing the Progressive Conservative Party under John Diefenbaker. The current party leader and prime minister is Lester B. Pearson, former high commissioner to the United Kingdom prior to Operation Sea Lion.
