The principality, established in 1297, was occupied by the axis, mostly Italian forces, during WW2, but because of its important economic value, Monaco continued existing as a "de jure independent state". In 1962, the country is mostly known because of its famous casino even if the traditional clientele found itself impoverished, exiled, or dead. The current leader of the country is Charlotte Louise Juliette Grimaldi.
